(note: Workshops will be offered on the sufficient enrollment and are filled on a first come, first serve basis)MUSIC Experimental Music 2: New Instruments/New Ideas! takes the Experimental Music of past years to a new level by adding a bit of melody and traditional instruments to the mix. While still preserving the experimental nature of the music, campers will continue to be taught to think musically and creatively while using recycled things to bring out the very best of their imagination. (ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Sarah Morini(Materials fee:$2) MYO Musical Instruments: NEW! MYO Musical Instruments combines Aboriginal art and other more primitive styles with music makers. Campers will create instruments, such as a kalimba, a rain stick, thunder box, and cuica that are as attractive as their sound. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials: $7)
APPLIED AND VISUAL ARTS Learn to Look: WHERE DO IDEAS COME FROM? This class is designed to boost observation skills as well as teach practical and expressive painting and drawing techniques while learning about 3 famous artists and their work. It helps young people understand where some artists get their ideas. Campers will learn to draw through direct observation using pencil and watercolor pencils. Acrylics, as well as other materials, will be used for painting to inspire and encourage creative expression. Campers will also be shown how to make artwork from recycled paper. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials $8) Hand-Made Pottery 1: The basic techniques of hand-building in clay will be explored where slab, coiled, and pinch pots will be created. For this, campers will be using a new clay that does not require firing. While this new clay allows campers to learn the same basic skills and produce the same artistic effect, it will allow campers to complete their pottery at camp. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $13) Hand-Made Pottery 2: The basic techniques of hand-building in clay will be explored where the techniques of slab, coiled, and pinch pots will be expanded on. For this, campers will be using a new clay that does not require firing. While this new clay allows campers to learn the same basic skills and produce the same artistic effect, it will allow campers to complete their pottery at camp. Note: Campers must have taken Hand Made Pottery 1 in order to enter this class. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $13) Gaga for Puppets: Not just for the little ones! Creative Puppets has been given a face lift. What if Lady GaGa made a puppet? What would she make it look like? One thing for sure, it would not be ordinary!! And what would you do to make your puppet extraordinary? (Ages 7-14) Artists/Instructors: Stefani Gosselink and Sara Morini (Materials: $6) Giant Puppets: New Instructor! Learned from the famed puppet-makers (the Puppeteers Cooperative) in New York City, Giant Puppets has become one of our greatest success. You’ll be able to march in a parade with the puppet you will make in this workshop!! This workshop will teach campers how to make puppets that are very large in size from cardboard, paper mache, and fabric. (Ages 7-14) Artists/instructors: Stefani Gosselink and Sara Morini (Materials fee: $8) Pop-Up with Panache: New ideas! Here, campers will learn basic cutting and folding techniques that will enable them to turn an original story they have written into a book that pops and moves. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee: $3 ) Fiber Art: New Project and ideas! Explore a variety of fiber-related arts such as weaving, crocheting, knitting, and designing using yarns, fabrics, and other textiles. This year, Ms. Marrsion will be focusing on the art of felting. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison Mummy and Me: New! is a workshop that blends today with the rich history and art of Egypt. Projects will revolve around this idea, draw the camper into this fascinating ancient world with an eye for developing things that belong in the present day but take ideas from the past. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Charlotte Flash. (Materials: $7) Beach Art:Where nature and Art COLLIDE! Take a trip to the seashore at Culture Camp! Cool and creative activities will include shell wind chimes and art, driftwood and coral sculptures, wave bottles, beach rock inspirations, shell games and easy ways to identify treasures from the sea. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Jill Jacobs-Quinn (Materials fee: $6 Pop Artist Doll: New! Who is your favorite pop artist? Lady GaGa? Michael Jackson? Justin Bieber? Beyonce? What would they look like as a doll? This may take a little research, handy work with a glue gun, felt, yarn, plus a needle and thread, but it would be quite interesting seeing what you can make and decorate—even if it not a pop artist at all. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Michele Peterson (Materials: $8) Wearable Metal:Blends art with Chemistry! It will teach different methods of texturing metal, coloring metal, and manipulating metal. 3 different ways of coloring the metal that involve painting along with some pretty fascinating chemical reactions. Interesting and artful jewelry items will be made from these metals to create a few pendants and bracelets that will definitely be unisex in design. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Michele Peterson (Materials: $12--as copper will be used to create the pieces). Timeless Toys: New!! Periscopes, pinwheels, and propellers . . . popular playthings of the past, but just as much fun today. Sure it's easy to go to the nearest store or click on the search button to find the latest toy, but half the fun of playing with homemade toys is making them yourself. Bring your creativity and let your imagination soar . . . like a parachute! (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials $6) Whacky Racecar: Features the artist Tim Burton!! Campers are taught to look at the things they see and use every day in a different way. Students create a silly and funny racecar from recycled cardboard. New techniques are explored as paper mache is used to create the final product. Campers also observe how recycled objects are used to cut costs as well as create appealing results. Color and metal are added to the project in order to allow for a freer sense of creativity and self expression. At its end, campers will experiment with ideas by improving on the cars ability to move efficiently without compromising appearance. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/ Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $6 ) Asian Adventure:Where East meets West! This is a workshop where campers sample Asian techniques such as Chinese calligraphy, origami, kirigami (paper cutting), brush painting of a lantern, and, if time permits, some Asian knot tying. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $7) Make Your Own Board Game: New Instructor! Build a board game for and all about you!! Add things about your family and friends. Make it crazy; make it interesting; make it silly; make it easy; make it difficult; make it beautiful; make it all of these things; make it yours!! (Ages 7-14) Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $6) Warhol, Chocolate, And Me: Features artist Andy Warhol! Campers will learn about Andy Warhol at the same time as do a portrait of themselves—Warhol-style—in chocolate! Campers will also make a beautiful frame to house their portraits. (Ages 7-14) Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $7) Duck Tape Alley: Have you seen the new rage? Make things using duct tape! The workshop will begin with a few small and simple projects, such as a duct tape wallet, and gradually work its way to more difficult projects. As always, creative ideas are welcomed! (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Antonia Carey (Materials fee: $7) Adirondack Crafts: Art meets Craft! This is a workshop where art meets craft. It is about creating crafts that reflect the style seen in the great lodges, inns, camps, and hotels found in the Adirondack Park. Campers will learn techniques, such as stenciling, paper mache, and others to create art from natural objects. In the process of making beautiful thing, they will learn to appreciate the roots of these ideas. Campers will also see how recycled things can be used to cut costs at the same time as enhance the creative process.( Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Caitlin Fedio (Materials fee: $6) 3D-ME: Show the world who you really are! You will complete a variety of projects such as a shadow box, life-like "doll," and plaster cast that express the true you in a 3-D way. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Caitlin Fedio (Materials fee $7) Fabulous Frames: KEEPING IT GREEN and BEAUTIFUL! helps campers look at the art of framing in several ways. They will visit the art of gilding though a demonstration and creation on their own "gilded" frame, plus see how artists and artisans create frames using recycled things (such as aluminum cans and recycled magazines). (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink. (Materials $7) Legal Graffitti: NEW! is an art form worth learning about. It makes use of a great deal of artistic knowledge. The more the artist knows about art, the better the graffiti. Campers will gain some of this knowledge themselves by learning about the artists themselves, graffiti terminology, and the tools of the trade while creating tags, a graffiti tapestry, TShirt, stickers, and stencils. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials: $10) Flamboyant Flyer: Blends Art with Science! While this structure will not fly, it might just be the next thing to spark imaginations of inventors and designers. The more flamboyant you think, the better. CULINARY ARTS Creative Cooking 1: Focus on Improvisation! This hands-on cooking course is designed to cover 3 main objectives: some basic knowledge of cooking, how to use this knowledge creatively, and the science of cooking. Over the week, many different items will be created. Brand new recipes are being worked on right now. (Ages 8-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $12) Note: This year’s Creative Cooking Workshop will include a segment on Knife Skills. Campers will learn a few basic cuts along with knife safety while using very sharp knives! Creative Cooking 2: New recipes! As an extension of Creative Cooking 1, this course is designed to show campers more of the technical aspects of cooking. Beginning with a more balanced view of what creativity is, these young chefs will be instructed on how to apply their creative ideas more thoughtfully. Brand new recipes are being worked on right now. (Ages 8-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $12) Note: This year’s Creative Cooking Workshop will include a segment on Knife Skills. Campers will learn a few basic cuts along with knife safety while using very sharp knives! "Gingerbread" Castle: Blends food and Architecture! Welcome to the 4th of a series on creating art using food. This year, we will be making a “Gingerbread” Castle. In doing so, we will be stressing the creative element. Where the basics for creating a gingerbread castle will be used, we will try to stretch the idea using our imaginations to create a castle that is fun, long-lasting, artistic, as well as unique. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Caitlin Fedio (Materials fee: $8) A Taste of American History: New recipes and ideas! Take a journey from early American history to today through food. Try cooking some native American recipes, some recipes from Williamsburg, from pioneer days, the Victorian era and beyond.. (Ages7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $8) Story Cake: Bring you story! Inspired by the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, campers will explore the world of cake decoration. Campers will be asked to tell a story using the design of their cake as their canvas. They will bake a cake from scratch, frost it, and then decorate it using fondant and gum paste to create all sorts of interesting (and edible) shapes. (Ages 7-14) Artists/Instructors: Stefani Gosselink/Caitlin Fedio (Materials fee: $8) Edible Arranging: Blends food and art! Have fun designing an edible fruit-flower arrangement, learn cloth napkin folding, create your own beautiful napkin rings, vegetable printing, fresh flower centerpieces, appetizer plate designs, decorative tooth picks and party straws. Delicious and imaginative! (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Jill Jacobs-Quinn (Materials: $7) Captivating Cupcakes: New! Style plus tatse! This workshop is designed to bring out the baker/artist in you. Campers will learn decorating techniques (such as a variety of toppers, self-portraits, chocolate baskets, etc) while expressing their own ideas onto cupcakes. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Sara Morini (Materials $8)
THEATER ARTS Project Harry Potter: New! This workshop will bring the impossible to life. In it, we will be taking parts of J.K. Rowling's magical world and bringing it into our own world. Campers minds will soar with the possibilities unlocked on their travels to Hogwarts and beyond. (Ages 7-14) Artists/Instructors: Antonia and Margaret Carey (Materials $9) Note: knives will be used as campers will be taught to whittle. They will also be taught how to handle the blades safely. Shakespeare for Kids: New! In this workshop, campers will be introduced to William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Adapted for a younger reading level, we will read, discuss, and explore one of Shakespeare's most well-known works. Campers will also bring home their own copy of the adapted play. (Ages 7-14) Artists/Instructors: Antonia and Margaret Carey (Materials $10) Note:This fee includes a book that the campers will take home with them.
ADDITIONAL Treehouse Bugs: Imagination is a must Campers will make a family of adorable, friendly bugs. Then they will use their imagination to create a tree-top habitat using all natural materials. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee $7) Games of Strategy: New Games/New Ways to Use Your Brain! “Game Theory” is the buzz word amongst the great thinkers of today. Campers will play games of strategy such as chess, checkers, backgammon, etc. with particular focus on creative and strategic thinking. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison Elf and Fairy World: A world from, a teeny-tiny person's point of view! Campers will create a miniature world just right for a fairy, troll, or elf using simple items from around the house and garden. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee: $6 ) Magnificent Marble Maze Run: A Blend of Creative Thinking and Problem Solving! Have you ever thought about designing a complex marble run? Now’s your chance. A variety of materials will be used to create paths, ramps, hills, loops, and spirals for a marble to travel down from start to finish. It’s a challenge you cannot miss!
