(note: Workshops will be offered on the sufficient enrollment and are filled on a first come, first serve basis)MUSIC Experimental Music: New Instruments/New Ideas! Inspired by the Broadway hit STOMP, campers will be taught some basic principles in music and apply them to the creation of ideas in sound. Campers will also be encouraged to invent some instruments from found objets and everyday items that also tend to the creation of new sounds for the music they create.(ages 7-14) Musician/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Jessica Stein(Materials fee:$2) Make A Music Video: New Songs! A workshop where campers will create a music video form a well-known popular song. At its end campers will take home a copy of the video on DVD for friends and family.(ages 7-14) Musician/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee:$10) APPLIED AND VISUAL ARTS Learn to Look: New! This class is designed to boost observation skills as well as teach practical and expressive painting and drawing techniques while learning about 3 famous artists and their work. Campers will learn to draw through direct observation using pencil and watercolor pencils. Acrylics as well as other materials, will be used for painting to inspire and encourage creative expression. Campers will also be shown how to make artwork from recycled paper. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $8 ) Hand-Made Pottery 1: The basic techniques of hand-building in clay will be explored where slab, coiled, and pinch pots will be created. For this, campers will be using a new clay that does not require firing. While this new clay allows campers to learn the same basic skills and produce the same artistic effect, it will allow campers to complete their pottery at camp. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Alysia Radak/Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $10) Hand-Made Pottery 2: The basic techniques of hand-building in clay will be explored where the techniques of slab, coiled, and pinch pots will be expanded on. For this, campers will be using a new clay that does not require firing. While this new clay allows campers to learn the same basic skills and produce the same artistic effect, it will allow campers to complete their pottery at camp. Note: Campers must have taken Hand Made Pottery 1 in order to enter this class. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $10) Creative Puppets: New INSTRUCTOR! This class is not just for the young ones. It introduces innovative and creative methods that result in artistic, delightfully original, whimsical, and workable puppet that extract the imagination and creativity from campers of all ages. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/ Jessica Stien (Materials fee: $6) Giant Puppets: New! We have a special guest instructor at Culture Camp—from the Puppeteers Cooperative in New York City!! You’ll be able to march in a parade with the puppet you will make in this workshop!! This workshop will teach campers how to make puppets that are very large in size from cardboard, paper mache, and fabric. (Ages 7-14) Instructor: Theresa Linnihan (Materials fee: $8) Pop-Up Books: New ideas! Here, campers will learn basic cutting and folding techniques that will enable them to turn an original story they have written into a book that pops and moves. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee:$3) Fiber Art Experiences: New Project and ideas! Explore a variety of fiber-related arts such as weaving, crocheting, knitting, and designing using yarns, fabrics, and other textiles. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison Creative Jewelry: New Ideas! Combining several things the campers have already learned (such as hemp knotting, bead-making, etc,) these campers will have the opportunity to refine some of their skills, create jewelry with a difference using unique materials, and learn how several ideas and techniques can merge to form something new and interesting. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Melissa Morini (Materials fee: $7) Flower Power: New ideas! Make impressive fresh flower arrangements in vases and containers. Campers will also learn how to press flowers to make note cards, framed art and bookmarks as well as create colorful silk flower accessories for rooms and outfits. Become a decorator! (Ages 7-13) Artist/Instructor: Jill Jacobs-Quinn (Materials fee: $7) Creative Greeting Cards: New ! Learn how to create one-of-a-kind, personalized greeting cards you can use for any occasion. We'll explore unique cutting and folding techniques, embossing, quilling, 3-D designs and more. You'll wow your friends and family . . . and yourself!(Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee: $3 ) Beach Art: New ideas! Take a trip to the seashore at Culture Camp! Cool and creative activities will include shell wind chimes, driftwood and coral sculptures, wave bottles, sand art, shell games and easy ways to identify treasures from the sea. Join in the beach fun (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Jill Jacobs-Quinn (Materials fee: $6) Creative Dollmaking: This exciting workshop blends history with the art of doll-making. Here, campers learn the art and craft of doll-making at the same time as constructing a small likeness of a favorite historic figures. Artist/Instructor: Peggy Benfield (Materials fee: $5 ) Goofy Dolls: Bring your Imagination! This workshop allows campers to create dolls from their imaginations. Total shapes — including bodies, arms, legs, can be pulled from wherever their ideas take them. Whether funny or serious, clothing and details can be added to make this a wonderful and interesting adventure in doll making. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Peggy Benfield (Materials fee: $5 ) Whacky Racecar: New! Campers are taught to look at the things they see and use every day in a different way. Students create a silly and funny racecar from recycled cardboard. New techniques are explored as paper mache is used to create the final product. Campers also observe how recycled objects are used to cut costs as well as create appealing results. Color and metal are added to the project in order to allow for a freer sense of creativity and self expression. At its end, campers will experiment with ideas by improving on the cars ability to move efficiently without compromising appearance. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/ Michele Peterson (Materials fee: $5 ) Nature Clock Houses: Back by Popular Demand! Inspired by the magnificent nature-houses exhibit at the Botanical Gardens, this workshop is a spin-off of that idea. All natural materials—such as pinecones, grapevines, seeds, tree bark, beans, etc.—will inspire campers to create their own unique and exciting sculpture-like houses. A quartz clock movement is added at the end to make it a functional work of art. Note: Hot glue guns will be used for most gluing. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Renee Fishback (Material fee: $10) Exploring Asian Arts: New ideas! This is a workshop where campers sample Asian techniques such as Chinese calligraphy, origami, kirigami (paper cutting), brush painting of a lantern, and, if time permits, some Asian knot tying. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $7) Make Your Own Board Game: New Instructor! Build a board game for and all about you!! Add things about your family and friends. Make it crazy; make it interesting; make it silly; make it easy; make it difficult; make it beautiful; make it all of these things; make it yours!! (Ages 7-14) Instructor: Jessica Stein (Materials fee: $6) Warhol, Chocolate, And Me: Campers will learn about Andy Warhol at the same time as do a portrait of themselves—Warhol-style—in chocolate! Campers will also make a beautiful frame to house their portraits. (Ages 7-14) Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $7) Duck Tape Alley: New! Have you seen the new rage? Make things using duct tape! The workshop will begin with a few small and simple projects, such as a duct tape wallet, and gradually work its way to more difficult projects. As always, creative ideas are welcomed! (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Margaret Carey (Materials fee: $7) Adirondack Crafts: Back by Popular Demand! This is a workshop where art meets craft. It is about creating crafts that reflect the style seen in the great lodges, inns, camps, and hotels found in the Adirondack Park. Campers will learn techniques, such as stenciling, paper mache, and others to create art from natural objects. In the process of making beautiful thing, they will learn to appreciate the roots of these ideas. Campers will also see how recycled things can be used to cut costs at the same time as enhance the creative process.( Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Caitlin Fedio Carey (Materials fee: $6) 3D-ME: New ! Show the world who you really are! You will complete a variety of projects such as a shadow box, life-like "doll," and plaster cast that express the true you in a 3-D way. CULINARY ARTS Creative Cooking 1: New recipes! This hands-on cooking course is designed to cover 3 main objectives: some basic knowledge of cooking, how to use this knowledge creatively, and the science of cooking. Over the week, many different items will be created. Brand new recipes are being worked on right now. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $12) Note: This year’s Creative Cooking Workshop will include a segment on Knife Skills. Campers will learn a few basic cuts along with knife safety while using very sharp knives! Creative Cooking 2: New recipes! As an extension of Creative Cooking 1, this course is designed to show campers more of the technical aspects of cooking. Beginning with a more balanced view of what creativity is, these young chefs will be instructed on how to apply their creative ideas more thoughtfully. Brand new recipes are being worked on right now. (Ages 8-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $12) Note: This year’s Creative Cooking Workshop will include a segment on Knife Skills. Campers will learn a few basic cuts along with knife safety while using very sharp knives! Food Art 1: Bring your Ideas! Welcome to the third of a series on creating art using food. This year, we will be making Gingerbread Pagodas. In doing so, we will be stressing the creative element. Where the basics for creating a gingerbread pagoda will be used, we will try to stretch the idea using our imaginations to create a house that is fun, long-lasting, artistic, as well as unique. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink/Caitlin Fedio (Materials fee: $8) A Taste of American History: New recipes and ideas! Try cooking some native American recipes, some recipes from Williamsburg, foods from pioneer days, and the Victorian era and beyond. (Ages7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $8) Food Art 2: New ideas! Inspired by the Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, campers will explore the world of cake decoration. Campers will be asked to tell a story using the design of their cake as their canvas. They will bake a cake from scratch, frost it, and then decorate it using fondant and gum paste to create all sorts of interesting (and edible) shapes. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Stefani Gosselink (Materials fee: $8) Edible Arranging: New Projects and ideas! This is a creative workshop about adding a touch of class and fun to food presentations. Campers will design edible fruit-flower arrangements, learn napkin folds, create veggie art, decorative toothpicks, napkin rings and more. Delicious and imaginative! THEATER ARTS Expressive Storyteller: New! Storytelling is one of the earliest forms of folk art. Participants will use their imagination and creativity to bring a story to life. You will animate a story using gestures, voice and facial expression. Giving your characters personalities so real your listeners will be transported into a world of imagination and play. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Margaret Carey (Materials fee: $2)
ADDITIONAL Book Making: Create a variety of books using different bookbinding techniques and materials. Have fun with a book sculpture at the end if there is time (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison (Materials fee: $8) Treehouse Bugs: NEW! Campers will make a family of adorable, friendly bugs. Then they will use their imagination to create a tree-top habitat using all natural materials. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee $4) Games of Strategy: New Games/New Ways to Use Your Brain! “Game Theory” is the buzz word amongst the great thinkers of today. Campers will play games of strategy such as chess, checkers, backgammon, etc. with particular focus on creative and strategic thinking. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Lynn Marrison Elf and Fairy World: Bring lots and lots of Imagination! Campers will create a miniature world just right for a fairy, troll, or elf using simple items from around the house and garden. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: JoAnn Rasmussen (Materials fee: $6 ) Magnificent Marble Maze Run: A Blend of Creative Thinking and Problem Solving! Have you ever thought about designing a complex marble run? Now’s your chance. A variety of materials will be used to create paths, ramps, hills, loops, and spirals for a marble to travel down from start to finish. It’s a challenge you cannot miss! (Ages 8-14) Artist/Instructor: Margaret Carey (Materials fee: $3) Note: Hot glue guns will be used.) Perfumes and Scents: New Projects/New Ideas! A unique and beautiful workshop. Campers will make rose water perfume spray, lavender sachets, lace trimmed ‘sweet dream’ herbal pillows, herbal bath scrubbies and edible recipes. A fascinating, sensory delight exploring flowers, herbs and their uses. Note: Some simple sewing will be learned. (Ages 7-14) Artist/Instructor: Jill Jacobs-Quinn (Materials fee: $7)
